The Highlands was marketed as one of the largest residential developments to be constructed in the Ottawa area at the time of its construction.
The development consists of two 24-storey towers that are connected by a long six-storey building, all clad in a light brown brick. The original plan for The Highlands was a massive eight phase development covering a 26-acre site in Ottawa’s east end, intersecting with Montreal Road and St. Laurent Boulevard. Only phase one of the plan was built, likely due to the deterioration of the economy that began shortly after the construction of what is on the site today. Despite only one phase being completed, the building won a Canadian Architect Yearbook Award for 1970 as an outstanding project.
