The Major General George R. Pearkes Building is a rigorous mass of concrete and recessed windows that takes its shape as a north and south tower connected by a central bar building.
Completed in 1974 for the Department of National Defence, the structure sits prominently along the Rideau Canal, extending the entire width between the Laurier Avenue Bridge to the south and the Mackenzie King Bridge to the north. Each of the three components of the building use the same repetitive grid façade, but the separation of the volumes by solid, narrow concrete towers allows the building to maintain the attention and engagement of viewers.
