The Hog’s Back Park pavilion is a playful park pavilion with washrooms and a canteen located a short walk from Hog’s Back Falls on the grounds of Hog’s Back Park. On paper its function is relatively straight-forward but the execution is what makes the pavilion special. It’s canopy that provides cover over the canteen seating provides shelter while adding a sense of fun and playfulness through the use of colour and making it much more visible in the surrounding trees.
Over time the colour had been lost to decades of simplified maintenance significantly diminishing the character of the pavilion until 2010 when the National Capital Commission undertook a rehabilitation program. As part of the rehabilitation canopy deterioration was addressed, washrooms upgraded and canteen improved in an effort to promote the on-going use and enjoyment of the pavilion for decades into the future.
With the upgrades and refound sense of play, the Mooney’s Bay Park pavilion and Vincent Massey Park pavilion(s) are significant community assets and speak to the growth of the area and earlier interest and approaches to large public parks. If you are in the area the pavilion can be reached on foot, by bike or is a short walk from a nearby parking lot.
