The demolition of the ten storey Union du Canada located on the eastern edge of Ottawa’s Byward Market at Dalhousie and York is now complete. As seen in today’s pictures (Apri 1, 2014) all that remains is a large hole, associated with the building’s basement and a pile of rubble on the southern extent of the site.
All that is left now is to wait for what gets built in its place and to see if it is of equal or better quality and more appropriate for its context.
Only time will tell … regardless a significant building representing a unique architectural expression, integration of art and architecture and an important embodiment of Franco-Ontarien history in Ottawa is now lost.
