The Legion Building sits alone at the corner of Kent Street and Gilmour Street, in a stretch of sparsely positioned midrise office buildings.
An inscription on the southwest corner of the building reads: “Dedicated to those who have served in our armed forces – 1956.” The building is clad in stone block on its street-facing façades, and in brick on its rear. For a six-storey office building set aside from the main busyness of the city, the building possesses a certain level of detail and composition, especially on its Kent St. façade. The interior of the building was renovated in recent years by Dredge Leahy Architects Inc.
In 2021 there was a request for a Zoning By-law Amendment, for the purpose of allowing the development of a 34-storey multi-use residential building on the site. The initial proposal sought to demolish the Legion Building and develop its neighbouring parking lots, while maintaining the historic houses to the north of the site. Pushback from the public and the city has managed to alter the proposal, and subsequent revisions to the original design have kept the facade of the Legion Building as the tower’s development.
