Another image of the week from a location outside of Canada’s National Capital Region. For this installment we are featuring Denys Lasdun’s National Theatre located in London, England. The theatre is located along the South Bank of the river Thames just to the west of the British Film Institute and the rest of the Southbank Arts Complex. Its construction spanned from 1967–76, but its design development extended back well before that.
The National Theatre has been identified by some as having a direct influence on Canada’s National Arts Centre, located on the banks of the Rideau Canada, completed in 1969. Please stay tuned over the coming months for a new feature gallery featuring the various aspects of the National Arts Centre which will include a gallery devoted to the National Theatre.
